Now that things have slowed down a bit for our families, we have rescheduled this meeting for December 3 at Loch Lomond Yacht Club, from 4 pm- 6pm.
Please RSVP if you plan to attend this meeting. Lifetime SEA member, and former President, John Paul Watts has once again challenged us with a scholarship donation match.
JP has put up $300 in a match donation. In other words, he will match any donation to his scholarship fund up to $300! The John Paul Watts scholarship fund was originally started with a $1000 match, which was met by our members. The fund is specifically for children from Camp SEA Stars or Camp Bahia, our two camps for underserved children from Marin City and the Canal District of San Rafael. Those camps are one week, half day. The camps are supported by Ca State Division of Boating and Waterways. However, if one of those children is really turned on to sailing and would like to go to the 2 week Sail Camp, they cannot afford it. This is where John Paul has stepped in. His fund is specifically for those children to attend the 2 week Sail Camp! So, as we slide into the "season of giving", we are looking for folks who will help us meet the match so we can get all of JP's money! Meg will put up a special tab on the "Donations" section of the website. Anything is welcome, it all goes towards the fund. You can only afford $10? That's fine! It means $20 with the match! Thank you, John Paul! And, the children thank you too. Due to concerns regarding air quality in the North Bay resulting from the fires, SEA has postponed the following events:
SEA Annual Member Meeting- Postponed. Rescheduled date TBA Freebie Member Sail- Postponed. Rescheduled date TBA Youth Fall Sailing- Rescheduled to 11/5. Other dates of 10/22 and 10/29 are expected to run as scheduled. Please check back for changes. We hope all of our SEA Member families and Youth families are safe during this time. Please contact us for more information.
This is SEA's annual fun "race" to China Camp scheduled in conjunction with the Chinese Heritage Day Festival.
Members and campers and/or families rent SEA boats to participate in this sail. SEA's trawler Descalza will act as a race committee boat and will set a starting line to the South of the Marin Islands. Racers will sail to China Camp for finish. We will raft up and go ashore to participate in the festivities at China Camp State Park. Family and friends who do not wish to sail are invited along on Dez, for a suggested donation, or can meet us via land at China Camp State Park. When: August 26th Times: Contact us for details, tentatively plan on being at LLM to rig at 9 am for a 10 am start off the Marin Islands. Please contact Jane for boat reservations, rentals or questions. Please email info@sfsailing.org Available Boats: Pico's/Laser/Quba Catalina's RS Quests Tackful Ride along on Des This year we have added a special treat for our Basic/Intermediate sailors and SEA Explorers, we will be joining the crew of Seaward, onboard an 82 ft Schooner for a day of sailing and learning on the Bay! SEA has partnered with Call of the Sea to provide this day sail and we are thrilled to be able to bring campers aboard a larger vessel to learn how sailing relates not only in small boats but on bigger boats as well. This is an opportunity for SEA members to join Sail Campers for this exciting outing. Please note: SEA members will be charged $30 per person for the sail, your Sail Card doesn't count. This fee is to offset the cost that SEA is paying to Call of the Sea and is still a very discounted rate from COTS public sail rates. We will need between 4-5 carpool drivers for each session, please let me know if you are interested in driving some campers.
Please contact Meghan Hartnett if you are interested in participating with the Sail Campers. More information regarding meeting location etc will be provided to you.
The Keelboat Dockside class will be this Saturday, May 6, 9-3, on the docks at LLM. We will be going over Tackful, but also learning about her engine, balancing a boat, anchoring, emergency equipment, person overboard recovery, docking the keelboat, heaving to.
This class is prerequisite to signing up for Co Op Mentoring Charters with our more experienced sailors (John Dick, Frank Lawler, Joe Rouse, Sandor Schoichet, Jane Piereth) which will be added to the calendar in upcoming months. Those of you who have taken the course before are welcome to come sit in again. Course is $200, but the mentoring charters are normally $20-$30, with splitting the charter fee. Such a deal! but you have to start with the Dockside class. You can do as many mentoring charters as you like. You do a check out sail when YOU feel ready! Then, you can charter the boat yourself, and take some friends! Or maybe you just like doing the mentoring charters and sailing with others, with an experienced sailor aboard. Totally up to you! A nice way to be sailing on the larger, SEA boat. Although I'm not entirely sure what the reference is supposed to be when a boat gets a new coat of bottom paint, Tackful has it! She has been hauled, inspected, spiffied up and has a new coat of bottom paint. Thank you to Keegan, Sandor and Nick who came and helped scrape and paint.
This boat is all ready for classes and charters so contact us for more details! We're also happy to announce that Joe Rouse will be the boatkeeper for Tackful, assisted by Gordon who is in the process of making her new hatch covers! Tackful is a stout sailing boat, easy to handle, not very complicated. She is the perfect step up for our students/members who want to go beyond the Catalinas on a keelboat. Plus, her engine is accessible from the cockpit, something those of you who are familiar with Shockwave will appreciate! Help Youth Sailing Today!
While our camps are priced lower than comparable programs in the Bay Area, the cost can still be prohibitive for some. Our goal is to open the world of sailing and recreation involving the marine environment to everyone, not just those who's parents can afford to send their kids to camp. We are looking to raise $2175 which will allow 3 full scholarships or 6 half scholarships for kids in need. SEA is a non-profit community sailing organization dedicated to providing affordable instruction in the art of sailing and encouraging the care for the marine environment. SEA partners with a local school, Bahia Vista to offer low cost programs to students from San Rafael's canal district as well as with Performing Stars located in Marin City. These camps are funded through a grant provided by Division of Boating and Waterways, however there is still a gap in funding for students who do not come through these programs or for those that wish to continue to other camps offered by SEA. Sailing Education Adventures’ Sail Camp is one of the best ways for children to learn to sail in The Bay Area. It offers intensive instruction on 12'- 14’ sailboats, as well as lessons on boat safety and seamanship. And most importantly, Sail Camp fosters teamwork and individual self- confidence. All classes are taught by experienced instructors certified by the US. Sailing Association. Please visit our fundraising page and help support youth sailing today! |
