Youth Counselor Profile - Fiona Fowler Print Email

F lookbackMy passion for sailing started when my very enthusiastic sailing friend would tell me wild stories about his experiences on the water. Sailing sounded like a very exciting sport, so I knew I had to give it a try. When I heard about a sail camp at the Marin Yacht club, I eagerly signed up.  I was just 10 years old. Now, five years later I am still sailing, and I have become a very passionate sailor.

What I enjoy the most about sailing is the wind. When it's light,  sailing becomes very relaxing. Though when there’s heavy wind, it becomes one of the most exhilarating sports out there. The conditions on the water can change at the drop of a hat so you must always be prepared to adjust. However, no matter what the conditions are, sailing is a great way to clear your mind.

I love to sail under the Richmond Bridge where the wind is often howling. And I love sailing to and exploring places such as the Marin Islands, Red Rock, and China Camp.

Sharing the Good - Volunteer Spirit at SEA Print Email

Brown_sailingSkipper Mark Brown set out last week with a crew of SEA folks for some Bay sailing. Mark journeys three hours from Sonora to take  members on keelboat and mentor sails. This past summer he even volunteered his time to teach a weekend 101 class, which meant a six hour drive in one day! Thank you, Mark!

Baron Hershberger was also seen on the docks learning how to operate the skiff. He'll help coordinate, as a volunteer, Catalina sails to ensure other folks have the opportunity to practice sailing the boats - it's what makes SEA go round!

SEA is recruiting skiff operators.  We need folks to coordinate and ensure safety on the water while other members practice sailing. Though the last Wednesday Catalina Open Sail is September 21st  (bring your flashlights - it's the autumnal equinox!), we hope to continue the Sunday Catalina Open Sails (2nd and 4th Sundays). But, we can't do it without volunteers. This is a great way to give back!

If you want to be trained as a skiff operator, please contact me, This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it . Let's keep the Sunday Open Sailing going strong!

In 2011 the California celebration takes place from September 17 to October 9, kicked off by the 27th Anniversary of California Coastal Cleanup Day! The California Coastal Commission has compiled a calendar of over 200 coastal and water-related events taking place in 31 counties.  Please visit the calendar at www.coastforyou.org and find just the right activity for you, your friends, and your family to celebrate our coast and inland waterways!

Where in the World is John Paul? Print Email

JPI"Why are we standing here on land and not sailing?"In case you haven’t noticed lately, a constant and valued fixture has been missing from SEA docks. Fortunately there’s a good excuse.

Long time member and big time SEA volunteer John Paul Watts is sailing!

And, he’ not just putting around The SF Bay mentoring and inspiring the many newbie sailors as he’s done over the years. He’s accomplishing what most of us dream of doing, and that is crossing The Pacific Ocean.

Mind you, he’s not exactly wet behind the ears – see last year's story “A True 70th Birthday Bash”. Though, after ten weeks at sea, it could prove as a fitting description.

Sailing.Drakes.Bay.009Joyce Jones, Mark Miglio, JP Watts, Leah PepeSome of SEA's many unsung heroes were just  featured in the July Issue of the Latitude 38! We're so happy to see some recognition for the huge efforts our members put into the sailing community.  2010 member Matthew Davidchuck kindly submitted text and photo to L38, highlighting  the things that make SEA's mentoring environment so special. Matthew heads up SEA's Grants Committee, and recently completed ASA 201 Instructor Certification. Thank you Matthew! And a big thank you to mentors John Paul Watts (currently sailing a catamaran from Saipan to Vancouver) and Leah Pepe, who recruited, mentored and inspired our current Director Mark Miglio!

maint1Last June 18, we had our second Maintenance Party of the year at SEA Docks and we would like say Thank You to: Anne, Christian, Dolph, Frank, Helena and Sandor.

These folks pitched in and helped out making the boats a little bit better. We now have solid sails, new sheets, new lines for reefing and in the process of fixing the motor mount for Shockwave. So when you see these folks, say "thank you" to them for helping out.

There is still one more scheduled Maintenance Party which we will announce soon, so I hope to see you all there.

You guys are great :)

SEA presented Kimball Livingston on June 11 Print Email

ac historyThe America's Cup and YOU!

On Saturday, June 11, Kimball Livingston spoke to a packed house at Sausalito's Bay Model Visitor's Center. It was standing room only for Kimball's lively and entertaining discussion, followed by a presentation of Gary Jobson's History of the America's Cup, 1851- 2007.

After hearing Gary Jobson speak at an America's Cup preview event in March, SEA director Mark Miglio was inspired to contact Gary and ask about his movie. Without hesitation Gary sent Mark a copy of the program, along with permission to show the film. Mark immediately set about brainstorming how to use the film to help get the sailing community, the city of Sausalito and SEA membership involved and excited about the upcoming America's Cup. Thanks to one of our newest members, Kaki Brzystwa, we were able to connect with Bay Area legendary sailor Kimball Livingston who agreed to share his insights on the America's Cup before the film. A journalist, writer and avid sailor, Kimball has covered every America's Cup since the 80's and is working with the current America's Cup program management on community outreach.

Kimball talked about his experiences at past America's Cup races and shared with us what he could about the upcoming event, with the caveat that there are lots of unknowns still at this time. Following his talk he answered questions from the audience.

He will speak about what the Cup means to Sausalito and the Bay Area and help start us on the road to the Cup! His passion for the Cup almost equals his passion for sailing on San Francisco Bay. As any Bay Area Sailor worth his/her salt knows, Kimball is the author of the classic, Sailing the Bay and was one of the writers for Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 release, WIND. He is an editor at large for SAIL Magazine and writes online at BluePlanetTimes.com.
