BBQ Dockside Fun Print Email
Written by Barbara McVeigh

bbq_funSEA folks enjoyed an impromptu gathering of food and spirits dockside last Sunday after several long time members hailed "It's time for more socials!"

And, that's the spirit at SEA - ideas can become reality with a good dose of energy and action by members. And, that's the benefit of a member run organization!

John Paul Watts and Joyce Jones headed up the plans. Thanks, Joyce, for shopping for the goods and John Paul for cooking them up! All those who came took part in some fun, even if it was adding to lively conversation. And, that comes easily when the strangest party vessels pass by with livley waves and passing toasts of wine!

Unexpected Surprise on a Keelboat Sail Print Email
Written by Helena Ghez

img_0528Prediction: Rain. Prediction: Cloudy low 60s.

The weatherman was incredibly wrong all week -- we had sunny skies and close to 70 degrees for our keelboat sail. While the wind died down to 5 knots (from a prediction of 25 knots!), John Paul, Pawel and I ventured out with plans to meet Kenichi and Catherine who were also out sailing.

We never made it as we had a big surprise! While cruising on the East side of Angel Island, we had a visitor…a 40 foot whale who was 20 feet from our boat! Little did we know, male whales will come into the Bay. We watched as it swam away, coming up to the surface every few minutes. It was a National Geographic moment in our backyard!

After another hour, we sailed back to Sausalito, completely jazzed with our outing.

Moral of the story: When you least expect it, it will happen. Oh yes, and keelboats sails are amazing!

SEA Flotilla Day - Season Opener Print Email
Written by Office

This year's SEA Flotilla Day, our annual Season Opener, kicked off the season in style. We got lucky with a sunny and warm day in what was a really stormy March! We had boats of all kinds participate, from our small Catalinas, our Santana, as well as our awesome member fleet ranging from Santana 22's all the way up to Michael's 42' Tartan.

Our Catalianas were able to dock unassisted negotiating the fluky, light conditions. Our attempts to negotiate for a fee reduction with the AI Parks folks did not go so well! However, everyone made it in just fine, and quickly moved to the BBQ for grub and cake. Thanks to Frank and Cathy for celebrating their birthdays with us, Leah for brownies and Karen + Wesley for music

The ride back was particularly challenging for our Catalinas, facing light air and a stiff flood on the Tiburon side. They all dialed into the only way out: Short-tacking along Angel Island, where there was some current relief and a lot more breeze.

AWESOME DAY! Thank you so much! You guys really bent over backwards to accommodate everyone's needs and did a great job. ---Karen

Thanks guys, the day came together really well. Thank you to everyone past and present who chips in to make these events feel full of community.--- Wesley
I think SEA chose the finest day in all of March for a sail and picnic. We aboard "Windseeker" with Skipper Mike Brownell encountered very nice sailing conditions all afternoon. Thanks for putting it together.--
A thanks also goes out to the skippers who brought out their own (or an SEA) boats. It was a great turnout. Oh, and I mustn't leave out everyone's appreciation of Mark for spending most of his afternoon eating smoke to provide all the attendees (I estimated 24, but they were moving around too much to get a precise count) with hot food. Well done! ---Bill

SEA's 2010 Fastest Catalina Racer! Print Email
Written by Barbara McVeigh

The first series of SEA's Catalina Regatta proved to be a successful blast! Congratulations to Wesley Frederick winning title as "SEA's Fastest Catalina  Racer"! Under lights and with wild applause, he was awarded a fanciful French bottle of spirits adorned with a golden SEA seal. Those who witnessed the fifth and final race would agree this skipper left others in his wake. The remaining three dinghies were neck and neck at the finish line, vying for second place.

Chris Holland overall put the heat on Wesley placing a close second. Wayne McIntosh and Barbara McVeigh tied for third, though timing indicates Wayne was a tad faster (this author hopes for a rematch), and Matt Tibbals placed fourth, earning him great respect. Matt and his crew Cory took Intro to Sailing just this year!
