Team SEA Races Summer Tuesdays Print Email

sycbeercans1207SEA's Shockwave, crewed by five stalwart members, raced Tuesday night's SYC Beer Cans.
The summer pattern has finally settled in, providing a nice 15-20 kts at the start with a building ebb making for a fun race. Racers actually finished early this time, allowing for good food and cheer at the SYC following the race.

The summer series motley crew: Skipper Mark Miglio, family members John Dick, Ed Cummins and Rich Hodges, and Sail Camp counselor Pierce. Spiffy new sails powered them into a close 5th place. They are definitely not satisfied with that result and will train to improve.

SYC Summer Series Final Print Email

final race picIt's hard to believe that last night was the final race in the SYC Summer series!  Anne, Joe, Chris and I casted off the dock, amazed at the incredibly beautiful night with crystal clear skies and no fog (has our SF Summer finally arrived?).  Since the days are getting shorter, we had a S-W-F course that would only take us about an hour to complete.  Chris, our skipper of the night, had a perfect start, crossing the line just seconds into the race.  We were convinced that a few boats went over-early, but we're not going to protest (we'll play nice!).  While the Santana can't point that high like other boats on the Bay, we fell behind and came in last place.  But, we came in seconds after the 2nd to last boat!  Well - someone has to take up the back of the pack!  We all learn an amazing amount each time we're out there, and that's what counts.

Thanks to everyone who participated this year, including, Chris (skipper), Adam skipper, Karen, Anne, Joe, Bill, JP (and me, Helena).  And, of course, thanks to our Santanas - Heatwave and Shockwave.  Here's looking forward to the Winter Series!

santana 525 sailing classesShockwave does appear to be high in the sky when looking up at her on drydock. But, Tuesday night's SYC Beer Cans racing will be the true test now that SEA's Santana 525 got a nice bottom cleaning and painting this week at Spaulding Wooden Boat Center in Sausalito.

There is something humbling when you watch a boat get hoisted into the air and it towers above you on the docks. You see the full exposed body of what keeps you floating in the SF Bay Waters. You can admire the shape of its keel and be in awe of how that one "wing" can slice through water and keep you from rolling when you hit 30 knot winds!
