Half Moon Bay Planner Print Email
Written by Johnpaul Watts
Are we all aboard for Half Moon Bay, October 6 - 7? And for the Navigation Planner on this Thursday, September 27, at 1900 on Dezzie
Make sure, please, you have registered on-line for Nav Planner before the sail.

Great news - Windseeker has confirmed she will go which means the SEA Tartan Fleet will be out there as the Blue Angels and Americas Cup lay claim to the Bay! Windseeker will take and sleep 5 crew; Summer Solstice will take 3 unless there is a couple aboard, then possibly 4. To be sorted out on Thursday along with other details.
I know I'd appreciate a ride from SF as may others. If you can offer, please let us know.

SEA Youths Sail to Oracle Racing Base! Print Email
Written by Barbara McVeigh

On Wednesday over 20 SEA youths sailed across The Bay to visit the Oracle Racing Base. We sailed in two groups with two boats. As we crossed the Bay we watched the international AC45 boats arriving in preparation for this week's World Series AC45s.

After a dodgy anchoring attempt, we finally settled in and got a ride on one of Oracle's many Protectors. Inside we had a wonderful tour of the base, including the many workshop containers that help keep the boats tuned up. Highlights included the AC33 trimaran that won the cup, as well as glimpses of the monstrously large AC72 being built. We finished the day off with a shower filled sail back across a lumpy Bay. All smiles all day.

Sailing Carquinez Strait Print Email
Written by Bill Crowley
During the months of August & September, I am keeping my trailer-sailer, a Venture of Newport 23, in a slip at Glen Cove Marina on the Carquinez Strait just east of the I-80 bridges, for purposes of getting more sailing time in during the waning days of summer. In preparation for a sail on Friday with Mark Potter, a cardiologist from my church, and his daughter Kat, a first-time sailor who is soon bound for college at Point Loma Nazarene University near San Diego, I went to the boat on Thursday afternoon for a couple of hours of last-minute preparations. With my new Wind Wizard, I recorded temperatures of 91 on deck and 98 in the cabin, with no wind gusts above 8 knots. Since the forecast for Friday was similar, I wasn't expecting great sailing conditions.

SEAdventures – What are they? Print Email
Written by John Paul Watts
IMG 3252Lifetime Member JP Watts has inspired many! His vessel Summer Solstice sailing to Half Moon Bay last year with SEA members. SEAdventures are the pinnacle of your sailing experiences with Sailing Education Adventures! Well, some may claim racing is - Twin Islands Race, Farallons Singlehanded, a beercan series, etc - but, for me, to set the hook on a Saturday night in Drake’s Bay, cook and share a meal, open a beer or wine with the sound of sea lions on the beach in your ears, the smell of breakfast next morning, breaking anchor and returning to SF on the Sunday – what could be better!

SEAdventures are mini-model cruises: you clip on, always harnessed to the boat; you stand watch for a couple of hours, alerting crew and skipper to ATONS, crab pots and whales; you navigate, learn to steer swells (8’ isn’t unusual) and following breaking waves, make decisions to tack, even to reef if winds hit 20 knots (we’ve experienced 37 knots – better be reefed!). You even let your skipper lay upon her bunk to sleep or read a good book, you now in charge upon the bridge!

Many members itch to take ASA 106 ‘Coastal Cruising’. Adventure Sails offer the experiences and learning opportunities of 106, though admittedly pearl by pearl! Hey, you can do an overnighter with SEA to and from Petaluma, motor-sailing 12 miles up a winding river; or mix it up with the container ships in the Oakland estuary on your way to Jack London Square.

Wednesday Advanced Catalina Sails are Back! Print Email
Written by Katka Letzing

WedWhen I started sailing, Wednesdays were always my favorite day of the week. Why? Because I just finished ASA 101 and didn’t yet feel confident to race or be in charge of the boat all on my own. So, I came every Wednesday and  practiced all of the skills I learned. I met amazing people who became my mentors and later co-racers.

Yes, I am definitely the competitive type and really wanted to show others that girls can sail or even race at that time. Five years later, I don’t only like Wednesdays, because I go and sail, but because I still learn something each time. What's more, I can hang out with a great group of SEA sailors and friends.

SEA Sails 2012 - New Directions Print Email
Written by Johnpaul Watts

Want to sail Catalinas this season? Sail to the Farallon Islands in 2012? Then SEA has new news for YOU!

Two meetings were held last month, one in SF at UCSF Mission Bay and one at Sausalito’s fish Restaurant, to discuss a new ‘bottom-up’ direction for SEASails – i.e. all those sails that come free with membership in SEA: Catalina sails, family, keelboat, racing and adventure sails, even full moon sails. A goodly 25 or so members attended over a pint and niblets: they signed up to their Sails of Interest.

From hereon in,  members will form teams around their Sail(s) of Interest and help each other plan via email lists. They will schedule and help realize the SEA Sails program for 2012.
Please visit each area of interest below to get on the mailing list. You must be logged into the system to see the mail signup info.

So, now, how do you get involved and then enjoy those 11 free sails a month between April-October? Register on line for the sail(s) that most interests you: your team of similar interested sailors will get in touch and you can help make participation in one or more sails happen. For fully paid up members only!

Questions to Director or John Paul.

When: October
Time: 9am-8pm  2 Days
Cost: Free Members

Join your fellow SEA members for a great overnight trip negotiating the shipping channel, avoiding the south channel then steering clear of the reefs north of Half Moon Bay.

This is a great trip to test your sea legs. Please make sure you sign up for our navigation planner session so you can review charts and safety procedures with our skippers. The trip will take you out past the main shipping channel, usually a left at buoy number two. It is not advised to cut corners but there have been more then a few boats lost in the "South Channel".

Where Are the Open Sails Print Email
Written by Eric Batalden

Hello all,

OpenSail3Where are all the Catalina and Keelboat Open Sails?

They are still with us, just in a slightly different form. I am penning this note to let our membership know about the change that has been implemented. The change is that our free open sails and Open Sails will now only be posted when a coordinator has been secured to organize them.

This change allows for more certainty in the calendar. The goal is to book events as far in the future as possible, which at this time about about one quarter. Because the calendar is more fluid I have setup a list to let folks know when the calendar has new events added, if you would like to be on the "Catalina Open Sail" list, drop me a note and I will add your email and you will be notified when I change the calendar.

Additionally we are a volunteer organization and I am looking for more folks to help run these open sails. If you are up for learning how to lead an open sail, let me know and I will get you up to speed.
Thank you all for making this a great sailing club.
