Member Profile - Frank Lawler and Cathy Stierhoff Print Email

100_1382Frank and Cathy met each other in the late 1980's when they both joined the Oceanic Society and took sailing lessons through the "original" SEA (and Crew Group). They both learned to sail centerboard dinghies and taught classes out of Clipper #2 in Sausalito for years. Frank bought his Santana 22, Tackful, in 1986 or 1987 and they started racing together over in the Berkeley Circle....where they say they were TERRIBLE then! But they stuck it out (the racing and the relationship!) and they consider themselves now as the "oldest salts" in SEA!  Frank says that they simply are two "mature" sailors who like being around the young and enthusiastic SEA sailors.

Cathy moved to Bay Area in 1983...knew no one, knew nothing about Bay Area other than that she heard it was a great place to go sailing. She decided to learn to sail as a way to meet people and get to know the area. Took her first lesson at Cal Sailing in 15-ft dinghies, and then advanced to keel boat sailing via SEA (formerly part of the Oceanic Society). As for Frank, he said that his passion for sailing started when his knees went bad and he could no longer ride his bike. They have been sailing then since 1983, about 25 years now.

SEA presented Kimball Livingston on June 11 Print Email

ac historyThe America's Cup and YOU!

On Saturday, June 11, Kimball Livingston spoke to a packed house at Sausalito's Bay Model Visitor's Center. It was standing room only for Kimball's lively and entertaining discussion, followed by a presentation of Gary Jobson's History of the America's Cup, 1851- 2007.

After hearing Gary Jobson speak at an America's Cup preview event in March, SEA director Mark Miglio was inspired to contact Gary and ask about his movie. Without hesitation Gary sent Mark a copy of the program, along with permission to show the film. Mark immediately set about brainstorming how to use the film to help get the sailing community, the city of Sausalito and SEA membership involved and excited about the upcoming America's Cup. Thanks to one of our newest members, Kaki Brzystwa, we were able to connect with Bay Area legendary sailor Kimball Livingston who agreed to share his insights on the America's Cup before the film. A journalist, writer and avid sailor, Kimball has covered every America's Cup since the 80's and is working with the current America's Cup program management on community outreach.

Kimball talked about his experiences at past America's Cup races and shared with us what he could about the upcoming event, with the caveat that there are lots of unknowns still at this time. Following his talk he answered questions from the audience.

He will speak about what the Cup means to Sausalito and the Bay Area and help start us on the road to the Cup! His passion for the Cup almost equals his passion for sailing on San Francisco Bay. As any Bay Area Sailor worth his/her salt knows, Kimball is the author of the classic, Sailing the Bay and was one of the writers for Francis Ford Coppola's 1992 release, WIND. He is an editor at large for SAIL Magazine and writes online at BluePlanetTimes.com.

China Camp Overnight 2010 Print Email
Written by Mark Miglio

China Camp's Heritage Days Festival experience is gold to many sailors.

On August 21st several SEA members joined the festivities either by car or sailboat at China Camp, a Chinese shrimp-fishing village that thrived on this site in the 1880s. They met up with members of the Master Mariners Benevolent Association and got to experience paddling to shore from anchored boats and entering a bygone maritime era listening to mandolins, sea shanties and boat talk of old wooden boats - schooners, ketches, junks and dories.

The following morning Captain Richard Gillette of Pegasus invited SEA members for hot coffee - arguably another treasure enjoyed after sleeping aboard!
