Sailing Lessons in Marin County and San Francisco Bay

SEA is holding an Advanced Dinghy Class. This is a great opportunity to refine your small boat sailing skills and learn a new talent or two.

Join us for two action-packed days on the water where we will practice sailing technique and examine some of the finer points of sail trim, weight balance and boat kinetics, sailing a marked course, and capsize recovery.

This is a 2 day course course.

Dockside Keelboat Course

This 1 day course course is a prerequisite to doing Keelboat Mentoring Charters.
Participants in Mentoring Charters are required to have current SEA memberships.

It will beheld from 9am-3pm, on the Shockwave at the dock.  White board presentation, boat familiarization, engine familiarization and starting, rigging, radio procedure, safety equipment, discussion of anchoring, docking, person overboard.

Introduction-to-Sailing Lessons

SEA, a non-profit community boating organization, is offering adult sailing lessons off Dock A at the Loch Lomond Marina in San Rafael. Class size is limited to 6 students per class.

Module 1 will be taught on the docks 
Modules 2 and 3 will be taught on the water using SEA’s 16.5’ Catalina keelboats.
Lesson fees are $50 for Module 1 and $200 each for Modules 2 and 3. With prepayment, all three modules are $425.

Upon successful completion, sailor will demonstrate his or her knowledge of:


  • Safety: Proper clothing and footwear, selection and use of personal flotation device (PFD), dock safety, prevention and treatment of hypothermia, water hazards and area awareness
  • Parts of a sailboat: hull, shrouds, stays, sheets, mainsail and jib, boom and mast, gooseneck, stern, headstay, standing and running rigging, etc

  • Functions of the following: Main and jib sheets, boomvang, halyards, outhaul, tiller, telltails, cunningham, etc.

  • Define terms: Port and starboard, astern, aft, heel, helmsman, transom, gudgeon and pintle, etc.

  • Seamanship: Without an instructor or direction: Hoist sails, demonstrate reefing the main, act as helm and crew tacking and jibing (with correct helm and crew communication; on upwind and downwind course), departure from and return to dock, getting into and out of irons, heading up and heading down, crew overboard procedures, sailing solo under light winds and seas

    Navigation: Apply the USCG Navigation Rules for prevention of collision

  • Knots: Tie without assistance in less than 20 seconds: Bowline, figure 8, cleat hitch, reef (square) knot, round turn and 2 half hitches, sheet bend

  • SEA offers a range of adult sailing. The goal of our courses is to help each student to become a competent sailing crewmember and skipper.
