Sail and skipper a 22' to 26' sloop-rig keelboat with outboard engine, in San Francisco Bay, with moderate to heavy winds and sea conditions; and with knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.

Location: Clipper Yacht Harbor, Sausalito.
Note: Some classes may have other meeting locations.
Prerequisites: Membership, Basic Cruising - Keel Boat 2 and/or minimum 96 hrs sailing experience, at least 48 hrs on a tiller.

Upon successful completion the Certified Sailor has successfully demonstrated his or her knowledge of:

Safety: Crew familiarization and emergency procedures, use of safety harness, identifying crew sailing abilities, assigning crew responsibilities for crew of 2 to 6 people, inclusive; make crew comfortable and welcome aboard, check that all systems and equipment on the boat are in working order and demonstrate knowledge of safety relating to each, describe how and when to file a float plan

Motoring: Supervise departure and return and assign crew, ability to perform daily and weekly procedures on an engine

Seamanship: Identify conditions that cause fog, set and retrieve 2 anchors set fore and aft, identify best anchorage position and facilitate raft-up fleet of boats and identify dangers, plot and sail compass course and estimate time of arrival by set and drift, take a fix using visual bearing compass and plot on chart

Theory: Correct sail trim with traveler and fairleads for angle of attack, draft, twist on mainsail and jib

Functions: Describe the immediate action to be taken when: halyard breaks, you run aground, you are about to run aground, engine fails in crowded anchorage and/or busy channel, how to handle dismasting, anchor drags, steering fails, a leak develops
