Sail and crew a 22' to 26' sloop-rig keelboat with outboard engine, in Richardson's Bay, with moderate to heavy winds and sea conditions.

Cost: $295

 

Location: Clipper Yacht Harbor, Sausalito.
Note: Some classes may have other meeting locations.

Prerequisites: Membership, Introduction to Sailing, and/or minimum 32 hrs sailing experience, at least 16 hrs on a tiller.

Sessions consist of 2 days on the water instruction running from 9 am to 4 pm.

Upon successful completion sailor will demonstrate his or her knowledge of:
  1. Safety: Purpose of bow and stern pulpits and lifelines, use of fire extinguishers, flares, bilge pump, dockside electrical charging system with onboard electrical control panel, VHF radio and emergency protocols, USCG requirements, navigation lights on boats and fog signals, treatment of hypothermia, identify responsibilities of skipper and crew, location of through hull fittings

  2. Motoring: Engine use, turning in confined space, docking

  3. Seamanship: Area awareness, remedies for running aground, proper use of dock lines and fenders, reefing the main, upwind and downwind sailing with consistent helmsman-ship, luffing and reducing heel, identify aids to navigation, basic understanding of charts and tide tables, steer a compass course; heave-to, unrig and secure boat on return

  4. Theory: Weather and lee helm, sail trim, Bernoulli's theory and lift

  5. Functions: Safety using winches, cunningham, fenders, boom topping lift, spring line, preventer, fairleads for the jib sheets

  6. Knots: Correctly formed in 10 seconds or less: bowline, rolling hitch, slippery reef, round turn and 2 half hitches, cleat hitch, sheet bend, coil and heave a line; and identify proper application of each

SEA offers a range of adult classes. The goal of our series of courses is to help each student to become a competent sailing crewmember and skipper.
