SEA Bucks-List Volunteer Event

This course designed to challenge the intermediate student all day long and will cover:

• Being ready to sail, gear, provisions, extras
• Rigging and Reefing double checking rigging and safety gear
• Casting off and docking in changing wind and current conditions including backwinding and lowering sails
• Technical small area sailing ROW
• Blindman sailing- eyes are closed and one crewmate communicates direction around a course with other boats
• Jib and mainsail techniques including 360s, wing on wing, channel sailing. backwinding, and sailing backwards
• Follow the leader around a closed course, sailing around marks
• Crew Overboard drills with a focus on stopping and drifting while still maintaining helm control
• Single handed sailing, it's like driving a stage coach
• Recap with a final discussion of what was learned and what needs improvement.

By the end of the day they will have the knowledge and confidence to get to anywhere anytime using our Catalina keelboats. We will focus on hiking out, using the tiller extension as well as hoving to and reefing on the fly. Keeping your boat safe and having fun is what this class is all about, and we will do it by running through some fun drills, including sailing in the dark, where the crew instructs the helmsman, who has her eyes closed, where to go. We will also practice sailing in a confined area and dealing with broken gear i.e. sailing with just a jib or just a main, as well as many other drills. Be prepared to be challenged!!

  Requirements  

• You must pay online or submit check to office to reserve your space
• Please come on time - we must rig the boats and get out on the water
• Introduction to Sailing, Sail Camp or equivalent experience
• Please check the weather
• Bring warm clothing, layers with waterproof shell, foulies if you have them
• Shoes with non-marking soles only please!
