Youth Counselor Profile - Fiona Fowler Print E-mail

F lookbackMy passion for sailing started when my very enthusiastic sailing friend would tell me wild stories about his experiences on the water. Sailing sounded like a very exciting sport, so I knew I had to give it a try. When I heard about a sail camp at the Marin Yacht club, I eagerly signed up.  I was just 10 years old. Now, five years later I am still sailing, and I have become a very passionate sailor.

What I enjoy the most about sailing is the wind. When it's light,  sailing becomes very relaxing. Though when there’s heavy wind, it becomes one of the most exhilarating sports out there. The conditions on the water can change at the drop of a hat so you must always be prepared to adjust. However, no matter what the conditions are, sailing is a great way to clear your mind.

I love to sail under the Richmond Bridge where the wind is often howling. And I love sailing to and exploring places such as the Marin Islands, Red Rock, and China Camp.

I desperately wanted to return as Counselor or Junior Counselor and be part of the organization where I first learned how to sail the first time. I love everyone's attitude at SEA  -  it's not just about learning to sail but also about having a great time for everybody. And, there's more. This camp especially teaches children teamwork and making new friends. We can also demonstrate essential skills that we might be able to carry and use daily for the rest of our lives.

Besides sailing with SEA, I would love to get more involved with the organization to become a better sailor and to get more tips on sailing and to also learn about boat maintenance. One of my favorite sailing experiences was sailing out to the Richmond Bridge when the winds were strong and the swells were high. Besides sailing, I also LOVE to surf.

As for my sailing goals, I would love to improve my racing skills and be able to sail bigger boats one day. On top of that, I would like to become a US Sailing certified coach as soon as I become qualified to take it.

Something that not everyone knows about me is that my middle name is Marie.

My final thought about sailing is: the worst day on the water is still better than the best day at school.
