Women in Maritime History

Discover the roles women have played in maritime history, with an exhibit  and programs throughout the month of March. Read about women in maritime history through books and documents in the park collections.

Suffragette March

Saturday, March 12, Noon, and repeated at 3:00pm. On Hyde Street Pier. FREE

Turn back the clock to 1901 and experience a costumed reenactment of a suffragette march in support of votes for women. Hold a sign and join the marchers (a limited number of signs are available), or let your voice be heard from the sidelines.

Ladies Salon

Saturday, March 12, 2:00pm, in the Lewis Ark houseboat, Hyde Street Pier. FREE

Join a salon of Victorian women as they discuss the issures of the day (in 1901). Corsetry, the effects of the Spanish American War, and voting rights will be a few of the issues discussed. Join in and voice your own opinion!

The Captain And His Wife

Sundays, March 13 and 27, 3:00pm-3:45pm. Aboard the historic ship Balclutha, Hyde Street Pier. Vessel admission fees apply: Adults, $5. Ages 15 and under, free. Free with national park passes. Discover family life at sea, when captains would often sail with their wives and children during the Age of Sail, on this tour through the Balclutha.

Women's Maritime History Books and Documents

In the Maritime Library and Historic Documents collections. Fort Mason Center, Bldg. E, 3rd Floor. Open by appointment only, M-F and the thirdSaturday of each month,1-4pm. Appointments: Please call 415-561-7030. The
library is wheelchair accessible by elevator. The park's archival, library, and artifact collections contain a number of
documents, photographs, books and artifacts that tell the story of maritime women, including those along the Pacific Coast. Come and explore, investigate, delve into and learn more about the lives of these fascinating maritime women. Here are just small samplings of what's available in the collections:
