Where in the World is John Paul? Print E-mail

JPI"Why are we standing here on land and not sailing?"In case you haven’t noticed lately, a constant and valued fixture has been missing from SEA docks. Fortunately there’s a good excuse.

Long time member and big time SEA volunteer John Paul Watts is sailing!

And, he’ not just putting around The SF Bay mentoring and inspiring the many newbie sailors as he’s done over the years. He’s accomplishing what most of us dream of doing, and that is crossing The Pacific Ocean.

Mind you, he’s not exactly wet behind the ears – see last year's story “A True 70th Birthday Bash”. Though, after ten weeks at sea, it could prove as a fitting description.

The last update we got, he and another former SEA member, now Tasmania resident and licensed Captain Ken Perez reported their position at Lat  52 29.76 N,  Long 173 31.30 E t - that’s up near the Bering Straits, in case you need to look it up. They say it’s cold!

They’re on one of the last legs after departing Saipan in late June delivering a catamaran to Victoria, B.C– they even made a splash in the Saipan television news before their departure and remarked on the hospitality they received from the locals. We've also heard they’ve dealt with some mighty winds, fog and more along their voyage. But, they are doing just fine in the "immense endless blue", as they've described their surrounds.

Good luck JP from your friends at SEA – we miss you and can’t wait to hear some good sea stories over “welcome home” toasts when you return.
