Wednesday - San Francisco's "June Gloom" was really getting me down. I looked out my window at the soupy gray, and found it hard to believe the forecast of afternoon clearing. Still, I got to thinking it was about time I paid an evening visit to Richardson's Bay to check out SEA's new dock space.

I called up Andy, SEA's program director, to let him know I'd be joining the evening's open sail.

At 5:30pm, I hopped in my car and headed across the Golden Gate. The fog was creeping up on the Headlands, but when I arrived at the docks at 6, it was sunny, warm and sporting a playful breeze! It was a classic Richardson Bay summer evening, where miraculously the fog always seems to stop just short of the docks and the water.

Seven SEA members (including some Sail Camp participants) took out three Capris and had a beautiful evening sail. The wind was variable and left us drifting once or twice, but it also gave us a few opportunities to get up on the rail and hike out. I especially enjoyed the challenge of threading through the different wind patterns to make our way back to the docks at sunset. We found the way without requiring a tow from Andy and the safety boat, though both were at the ready if needed.

Even with a quick stop to grab a snack at Molly Stone's, I was walking in my front door by 9:30pm, feeling greatly refreshed and gloom banished! Wednesday night sails are truly the happiest happy hour around. And they're free for members! Come on down and join us next Wednesday. I'll race ya!
