Sailing Education Adventures

Bring in the Chinese New Year at Hyde Street Pier and the Visitor Center with a day of cultural activities, kids crafts, history, traditional music, and a chance to see the park's sailing Chinese Junk Grace Quan colorfully decorated for the New Year.

Events begin at 10am in the Visitor Center where kids of all ages will have the chance to make ink blot prints, use rubber stamps to create New Year decorations, and learn how to work with paper to make origami shapes of fish and shrimp. Craft activities run from 10:00 to 2:00.

From 11:00 to 11:30 in the Visitor Center, San Francisco teacher/author Irene Collier will present "Fish Tails and Tales," stories about Chinese American fishermen from a unique selection of books about Chinese American history.

At 1:00, aboard the historic ferry boat Eureka, singer Wilma Pang and the Chinese Instrumental Ensemble will perform a concert of traditional Cantonese music.

Park Rangers will present talks on the pioneering history of Chinese American communities on the West Coast. Presentations will take place on Hyde Street Pier at 11:00, 11:30, 1:00, and 1:30. Talks will be presented in both English and Cantonese.  The day's celebration will culminate with a colorful Lion Dance at Hyde Street Pier. Two lions accompanied by drums and cymbals from Leung's White Crane Dragon and Lion Dance Association will perform at 2:00pm.

View the Chinese Junk Grace Quan  from the pier during the park's open hours from 9:30am-5:00pm. She will be decorated with four Chinese
characters (words) translating to "yi fan feng shui," or "smooth sailing," a lucky symbol for the New Year.
