Jennifer McKenna’s two crew on her Santana 22 Zingaro had never sailed before going out practicing once before the race. “I felt that it was in the spirit of the regatta to take friends out who weren’t sailors. They’re my aerial dance teacher and her daughter. They dressed up in pirate costumes.” Jennifer is accustomed to racing with very experienced sailors, and it was good for her to have to articulate and explain every procedure.

I set a goal to reach beyond my comfort zone regularly and one item I listed was to do a sail race. I had always assumed I would need advanced skills and that this would be a stressful situation so had been shying away from it. When the opportunity arose to be in a crew of all beginning racers with Sandor at the helm, I jumped at the opportunity…and am so glad I did.
If there is such a thing as a perfect night of sailing, my race this week at SYC Beercans was that....unusually warm weather and wind, great people on the boat, easy environment to learn, stunning sunset and so much more. It did not matter that the wind died in the last leg of the race preventing anyone from our entire group from actually finishing. Just as the wind stopped, a huge pink moon rose, providing beautiful interim entertainment – and the laughter and singing of other crews around us added to the unusual situation.
While none of our crew had ever raced beyond the SEA Race for the Dawg and we had only sailed together once, we worked well together, reinforcing not only how important teamwork is in sailing, but how fun it is as well. Sandor is a patient man and a fabulous captain taking on three newbies, dealing with some boat issues and yet still keeping up with the pack.
Moral of the story – Go for it!, stretch…with SEA members by your side you will learn, laugh and be happy you tried something new. |

The Sausalito Chamber of Commerce invites you to come to the 58th Annual Sausalito Art Festival for FREE!
As always, the world-renowned Festival will be held at Marinship Park in Sausalito over Labor Day Weekend, September 4, 5 and 6.
The Chamber invites you to sign up for a 3 - 4 hour shift at the Chamber's Food Booth, before or after which you'll be able to spend the rest of the day enjoying the music, the art, the people and the one-of-a-kind Festival, for FREE! (For more information on the Festival, check out www.sausalitoartfestival.org.)
Each year, the amazing food at the Festival is served up by local nonprofit organizations. The Chamber of Commerce (which you may know that SEA is a member!) will be grilling gourmet hamburgers and veggie burgers. These burgers have been wildly successful over the last few years, and the event has proved to be one of our biggest annual fundraisers.
Contact Cath Stierhoff for more information.

Sailing Education Adventures joined the National Safe Boating Week last May 21th, Saturday at the Travis Marina / Presidio Yacht Club.
SEA provided rigging and safety demonstrations as part of the national event to promote safe boating and distributed over 100 PFD to passing families, youths and curious visitors. There were life jacket fittings, food concession, music, games, and a sailing demonstration. A big thank you to volunteers Wayne McIntosh, Barbara McVeigh and Pierce Reisinger for helping with demos, fittings and coordination. We would also like to thank the USCG Auxiliary and Gail Giacomini for their support in organizing a great event! We'll be back next year.

If you are out there sailing on the bay and see a spooky-looking white yacht moored off Sausalito, check out "A". Don't get too close though, I bet these guys have a security team that would make the Royal Navy press gangs look like Sea Scouts.
