Overview

Fewer people sail because fewer families sail. Research from Nick Hayes' book Saving Sailing (Crickhollow Books, 2009) shows that when recreational sailing was at its peak in the late 1970s, 12 million people sailed actively, and it was predominantly a family thing. Like tent-camping, fishing or hunting (also all down in the same period), sailing was done in family groups 80% of the time, and almost 5% of Americans were active recreational sailors. It was something shared between grandparents, parents and children over long stretches. Incidentally, the children who grew up sailing this way make up almost 70% of the 2.6 million people who remain sailors today. But sailing as intergenerational activity has largely dried up; given way to sailing as a youth-sport (About 13% of today’s sailors are kids, but they leave sailing at adulthood, just as they would leave soccer or baseball.)

  • Sailing is a perfect family activity, and can last for lifetimes. We are going to show you how.”
  • It’s not expensive or inaccessible. We will offer convenient schedules, but you’ll have to commit to invest the time to be with your kids.
  • We will provide top-notch counseling along the way.
  • We will make sure you have everything you need -- boats, equipment, safety gear, even clothing.
  • We will make sure it is safe, clean, and lots of fun
