We all know SEA is exceptional because its Instructors and Assistants volunteer.

They volunteer because they rather like sailing. And they learn a lot about sailing by teaching others the skill! Twice each year SEA hosts Instructor Assistant workshops to introduce members to the art (and it is an art) of sailing instruction. Participants recommended by our Head Instructor will either
-be able to assist SEA Instructors in teaching Introduction to Sailing.
-have an action plan to move them towards assisting.

Here's how it works:

For Introduction to Sailing, a principal assistant is needed for the duration of the course. These are members who have been assisting Instructors for at least one season and have been recommended into the "Primary" position. They help with teaching docking technique, operating our safety boat with floating dock, and know the course content backward and forward.

Beginning Assistants help with one or more classes throughout the course by working with the Instructors to help teach students and perform designated tasks assigned by the Instructor. These tasks include:
  • showing students how to rig and de-rig the boats
  • crewing our Capri's
  • effectively communicating topics covered by the Instructor
  • encouraging and helping students practice sailing skills
  • patiently review lecture topics on land and on the water
  • helping our Instructors make our classes safe and rewarding

Both assistant levels must have taken Introduction to Sailing and are encouraged to gain sea-time through Member Sails and Open Dinghy Sails. It's expected that Primary Assistants have taken Intermediate or has regularly attended SEA Open Dinghy Sails. Potential assistants should also have a desire to teach and an ability to work well with others.

Beginning Assistants will learn:

Teaching - Rigging and de-rigging terminology (all parts), be able to verbalize everything, dock and boat inspection, different teaching techniques for each student.
Sailing - Close course training, equipment failure training, COB, 360 drills, safety position, docking, solo sailing, wind awareness, reefing.

Primary Assistants will learn:
Safety boat operation including inspection, preparation, oil and fuel check, different motor positions for low tides, launching and recovering floating dock, setting and retrieving buoys, towing dinghies out and back.

These free workshops are for the aspiring, the curious, and the advanced. If you think you might enjoy teaching sailing but are not sure, come out and get a hands-on lesson in what strong sailors think about, plan around, and focus on when teaching others how to sail. If you see yourself as a potential Sailing Instructor, this course is the just the beginning, but it's a great start!!
