SYC Twin Island Race #1 - Scott Askew, foredeck guy! E-mail
Written by Leah Pepe
Thought I'd share our experience during the Twin Island Race on Saturday....

I entered the race last minute and Scott and another Santana 22 owner answered the call for crew....

Scott was willing to learn how to do the foredeck on the Santana 22 - foredeck on Kelly for this race, was putting up/down the whisker pole going downwind and jibing the pole.  We left the docks early to give Scott some time to be acquainted to what he needed to learn.  He is definitely a quick study!

We had "two" very nice starts!!  I do need to learn how to read the SI's!!  There were only two starts for this race, a spinnaker and non-spinnaker start.  This is my first racing season, so I have given myself a learning curve.............a nice steep one!  As we were motoring out to the course, we looked at the tides/currents and the race course and decided which way to travel.  The Twin Island Race is very fun - you can round Angel Island and Alcatraz any direction.  Angel is land to Starboard first or Alcatraz to Port first.

March 2009 Member Meeting Print E-mail
Written by Linda Young

On March 3, twenty-five SEA members met to share our thoughts on what we like about SEA and what we'd like to see more of.  This was also an opportunity for our new Program Director, Andy Signol, to introduce himself.

Participants said they value SEA's commitment to accessible sailing, and they appreciate our members' passion for sailing.  They also had suggestions for more effective methods of communication, and for additions to curriculum and events.

For members who are logged into this website, the minutes are available here.

Thanks to Chrissey Field Sports Basement for lending us their community room and providing free refreshments!

Racing 101 Class 2009 Print E-mail
Written by Linda

In the last days of March, twelve SEA members participated in a racing class taught by our own Frank Lawler.  The class consisted of 4 hours classroom time covering tactics, strategy and racing rules, and an additional 2 hours on the water to practice racing starts.

Sunday, March 29 was a gorgeous day on the bay.  And while it started off with light flukey winds, it quickly settled into a light but steady southerly breeze.  The students split up onto four boats provided by SEA members - 3 Santana 22's and a Ranger 23.  Each student got an opportunity to take the helm for four starts, while the boat's owner gave direction when needed or requested.

After each start was completed, the 5-minute count-down recommenced and the boats circled back to approach the line again.  It was a lively day, with lots of opportunities to practice tactics and boat handling in close quarters.  And while "Kelly Shawn" made it across the line first on nearly every start, we all had a great time and learned a lot!

Thanks to members John Paul Watts and Mark Miglio who played committee boat (and had to set up the start line multiple times early in the day due to flukey winds).  And thanks to members Sean Canavan, Frank Lawler, Jennifer McKenna, and Leah Pepe for graciously providing the use of their boats!

Abandon Ship !? Print E-mail
Written by Mark Miglio

MOUNT PLEASANT, S.C. — Boat owners are abandoning ship.  They often sandpaper over the names and file off the registry numbers, doing their best to render the boats, and themselves, untraceable. Then they casually ditch the vessels in the middle of busy harbors, beach them at low tide on the banks of creeks or occasionally scuttle them outright.

Houseboats of Sausalito Print E-mail
Written by Mark Miglio

April 22nd, Marin Civic Center Library

Historians Richard Cunningham & Larry Clinton, will give an illustrated talk on the houseboat communities of Sausalito, Larkspur & Belvedere to celebrate the publication of Phil Frank’s posthumous work, which forms part of Arcadia Publishing’s Images in America Series. For more information, please visit  online calendar.

The Floating Homes Association is a volunteer civic group which represents the interests of the residents of the 400+ homes in five floating home marinas on Richardson Bay. For many years, the Association has raised funds for our library through its renowned Floating Homes Tour. It was with great regret that the Association did not organize a tour for 2008, but we are hopeful it might return in 2009. Please, check their website in the coming months for further information.
